Participating Artist

The Art of Life Exhibit

This project linked 52 female cancer survivors with 19 local artists to co-create works of art about life and survivorship. Each artist worked with a designated group of women to collaborate on an oil, acrylic, collage or mixed media piece on canvas. The project was conceived to give women cancer survivors the opportunity to experience the therapeutic aspects of art and creative expression, while at the same time supporting local artists. According to Dr. Chris Perkins, California Oncology’s medical director, the program aims to promote the benefits of art therapy, and to create awareness that cancer should not conjure up feelings of eminent death. “For many people, cancer can mean renewed life,” said Perkins, “and we want to communicate that through art.”

The Renewal Retreat In Monterey, California

Where can women go to discuss cancer, life, renewal and challenges with a variety of health specialists—during and after treatment? How can we learn more about Survivorship? Our first Renewal Retreat was held at the Portola Plaza Hotel in beautiful Monterey Bay, a fitting backdrop for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The Story Project:  Stories of Hope and Healing

We encourage patients to express themselves during cancer treatment through the art of movement, artistic expression and writing. Journaling, poems, letters and short stories are ways women can release emotions that are otherwise hard to communicate face to face. Recently, we asked patients to submit short stories about an aspect of their cancer experience to share with other women. They graciously offered their personal words of hope and healing. Click on the title to read the story of hope and healing.
